Cigars have tanins which come from the tobacco leaf. This is one of the reasons fans of a good "habano" prefer to accompany the cigar with a sweet and alcoholic beverage. Something that cleans and refreshens. Usually rum or cognac is used, though sweeter beers are also matched to cigars, especially amber or strong ales. In general the dark beers (such as Stout) tend to have tanins, since a portion of roasted barley or malt is used in the mash. The "tanins on tanins" does not work well, this being one of the reasons that cigars don't match well with wine, especially red wines. Also, the Pale Ales or IPA´s tend to be too bitter due to the hops. Sweetness is not usually a characteristic of lager beers. Thus cigars tend to be matched to sweeter ales. In the Szot portfolio we recommend our Strong Ale, our Old Ale and our Amber Ale. Our expert in cigars, José Miguel Salvador, importer and distributor of "habanos" in Chile, recommends the Szot Strong Ale with mild and moderate "habanos". There is an interesting interplay between the beer's freshness and the cigar. Yet the beer has the strength to match the habano. It is when we begin to match the stronger habanos, such as the Cohiba Siglo II or Partagas Serie P No. 2 in the photos, that the licors (rum) start showing an advantage, although our Old Ale still manages to hold its own. We can recommend the OX restaurant in Vitacura, Santiago as a cigar friendly place, especially after the lunch crowd thins out, plus they have Szot beers on their menu.
